Harmonization Part A

Login to Demopaedia.org

The video describes how to login on demopaedia.org. If you are a member of the IUSSP you are supposed to have an account on the Population Open Encyclopedia (POE) (en.demopaedia.org for English) as well as on the Multilingual Demographic Dictionary (MDD) (en-ii.demopaedia.org for the English second edition). Your username and e-mail are known and you can use any of them for login. You need a password and the video explain how to get it. Once you are logged, you have the right to edit the pages of the POE and can add comments on any Discussion pages of the MDD. 1 - How to login to demopaedia.org (time=2'33")

Some easy editing

A second video describes how to edit and save small changes to a page: 1 - 1b Some easy editing (time=6'05")

I want to use Word for the translation of chapter 8

Usually, when until you are mastering the wiki syntax and process, it is easier to concentrate on the text to be edited or translated using your standard word processor. The video explains how to get a chapter (8 for example) from the MDD into a Word document. 2 How to generate a Word file for the translation (2'24")

I know that the harmonization is a an on-going process, what is the current situation?

The harmonization process does concern the English language but also all the languages for which a book has been published in the past. New translations are supposed to derive from already harmonized versions.

If you are willing to help but do not know what has already been done or not, here are two videos describing how you can determine the current situation in your language as well as in English. The first video describes the so-called "Missing terms" which are detected by a special tool. A term is missing when it exists in at least one of the 4 main second editions (French 1981, English 1982, Spanish 1985 and German 1987). Currently (October 2012), only the French edition has been harmonized!

Missing terms with demopaedia.org/tools

If you click on http://www.demopaedia.org/tools/spip.php?page=missing_terms&lang=en&edition=fr-ii there is no more missing term in the French second edition which is now named seconde édition unifiée in French. But if you change fr-ii by ms-ii for the Malay, you will probably see what are the missing terms.

It is important to notice that in the spirit of the former Commission on Terminology of the mid 50's, not all the terms were supposed to be translated and that a translation did not have to be imposed if the term or expression was not used. But usually, most of the missing terms of the second edition were really missing and authors forgot to translated them. It was not the case for the first editions when the influence of the Commission on Terminology was still perceived.

Many new modules are now derived from the English module only and if the term doesn't exist in English it may exist in other languages. We have to be cautious. For example, the expression Child at the breast was used in the first English edition of 1959 and is now reintroduced in the second harmonized edition because even if there is no English term, it exists in probably any non English language (nourrisson, lactante etc.). A translator should always use a note in order to detail some specificity of the language. 3a - Using demopaedia/tools for monitoring the current missing terms to be translated (4'27")

To be checked and Talk pages

Once you know how to translate a term or an expression, you have to go the Discussion page of the page to be modified to see if somebody already proposed a translation (but did not commit it otherwise it will not be detected by the missing term tool).

The video explains how to click on the To be checked link in the left pane (it appears only when you are logged successfully) and to see at the very end of this category page what are the pages still in discussion. If a page has been double checked by someone else, the Discussion page is moved to the double checked category (the {{To be checked}} template on top of the Discussion page is renamed {{Double checked}}.

The video explains how you can paste the translation into the discussion page and how you can indent your comments and sign them (time-stamp). 3b - Using the "To be checked" category to participate to the discussions on the terms to be translate (10'40")
