Notes on the use of the dictionary

The dictionary consists of a text supplemented by notes in small type and an alphabetical index. All terms which are printed in bold face in the text and the notes are listed in the index. Where an expression consisting of several words is printed in bold face it will appear in the index under each of the principal constituent words, e. g., "density of population" is indexed under D as "Density population", and under P as "Population density".

Each term has a reference number which is composed of the number of the paragraph in which it appears and an identification number. For terms appearing in the body of the text the identification number is printed immediately after the term, and for those in the notes it is the number of the note; the latter also relates the note to the corresponding term in the text. Terms occurring in the notes which are not in the text are followed by an asterisk (*) in the index and reference numbers.

Text terms with the same reference numbers in the various sections of the dictionary correspond to one another. For instance, the translator who wishes to find the equivalent French term for a given expression in English should look up the English expression in the alphabetical index of the English section and find the correspondingly numbered paragraph in the French section. It is strongly recommended that the whole paragraph in which the expression occurs in both sections should be read in order to guard against faulty translation due to slight differences in usage; this will also be useful if, in one of the languages, no term exists to express a particular concept.

Seuls les éléments terminologiques figurant dans le texte proprement dit se correspondent de volume à volume, cette correspondance étant établie au moyen du numéro de référence identique (sans astérisque) qui leur est attribué.

Different terms which are used to express the same concept have the same reference number. Any term which is susceptible of different interpretations may have two or more reference numbers which refer to the appropriate contexts. Terms printed in bold face in notes do not necessarily correspond to one another in the different sections. Moreover, in paragraphs 303 and 344, which deal with the administrative structures of different countries and with their educational systems, there is no correspondence between the different language sections. Terms introduced in these paragraphs have no identification numbers; the paragraphs themselves are subdivided into lettered sections, A and B in the English section referring to Great Britain and the United States of America respectively.

Pour naviguer entre la version imprimée et la version en ligne du dictionnaire, il importe de noter que les chapitres sont également divisés en sections ou sous-chapitres auxquelles correspondent les pages wiki de la version en ligne. Chaque section est numérotée sur deux chiffres. De manière générale, le numéro de section d'un paragraphe correspond aux deux premiers chiffres de son numéro de paragraphe (le paragraphe 104 appartenant ainsi à la section 10), à quelques exceptions près : les paragraphes 360, 361 et 362 appartiennent à la section 35, le paragraphe 640 à la section 63 et les paragraphes 810 et 811 à la section 80. Les changements de section sont signalés dans le texte par un astérisme (⁂).

Accessing the Open Encyclopedia on Population

Each text term, defined as a demographic term or demographical expression of the Multilingual Demographic Dictionary which must be translated into any language, will have its own named page in the Open Encyclopedia on Population.

The original definition expressed in one of the two Multilingual Demographic Dictionary editions is (or was if the paragraph has been overwritten by the second edition) a first start for a multimedia Encyclopedia on Populations.

The Multilingual Demographic Dictionary offers the advantage of large consensus (United Nations commission on terminology of the early 50's) and having been translated into various languages (about 15 languages). But it has the disadvantage of being old (1981 for the second edition in French): some sections or even chapters have to written or rewritten.

Also Encyclopedia have always used graphs or pictures which were missing in the printed Multilingual Demographic Dictionary and modern Encyclopedia can be multimedia and can offer animated drawings or audio files.

Using the free software of the Wikimedia foundation (called MediaWiki), Demopædia will offer the same possibilities with the same rules and constraints as Wikipedia.

Thus the syntax of the various URLS is similar to any Wikipedia site, i.e by suppressing any mention of the edition, just keeping the two letters of the abbreviated language: http://en.demopaedia.org/wiki/Fertility.

Also the wiki syntax of Demopædia is exactly the same as the Wikipedia syntax.

Citer le dictionnaire

Suite à la mise en ligne du dictionnaire démographique multilingue, ce dernier est désormais disponible sur plusieurs supports. Bien que cette seconde édition unifiée ne soit plus amenée à évoluer de manière importante (à la différence du projet d'encyclopédie ouverte), des corrections mineures peuvent encore y être apportées. Dès lors, l'exemplaire que vous tenez entre vos mains correspond à une copie, à une date donnée indiquée en page de garde, de la version en ligne.

Pour citer le dictionnaire démographique multilingue, il est donc recommandé de consulter au préalable la dernière version en ligne, le site web étant la référence. Le dictionnaire pourra être mentionnée dans une bibliographie sous la forme suivante :
